Lincoln Cosmetic Dentistry - Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is a technology that makes use of a composite resin material that can be used to repair a tooth. The color of the bonding material can be changed to match the color of the damaged tooth and sourrounding teeth, leaving the repaired area virtually undetectable. This technology is used for various proceedures including but not limited to a chipped tooth, a crack, surface abnormalities, and fillings.

Replacing Silver Fillings with Cosmetic Bonding Resin

Silver fillings eventually need to be replaced. You can count on having a silver filling last somewhere between six to eight years depending on eating habits and other factors that effect ware. Silver fillings can be replaced by dental bonding resin and reshaped to give the tooth a more natural look. An added benefit that comes from using dental bonding resin is an extending life span of up to eleven years with the proper care.

How Resin Bonding Works

The principle behind resin tooth bonding is actually very simple. Consider how a hole is repaired in a wall. First the wall is cleaned and sanded to provide a rough surfice for the putty to adhere to. Next, the putty is used to fill the hole or crack, allowed to dry, and then sanded to blend in with the original surface. With dental bonding, the tooth is cleaned and a etching material is used to provide the rough surface. Once the surface has been prepared, the resin is placed on the surface and cured (dried or hardened) with a very bright light. Finally, the dentist contours the new surface to match the exisiting surface. This entire process can take just a few minutes for small proceedures or longer for larger areas or difficult contours.
